Eton FR140 Microlink Self Powered Radio
Eton FR140 Microlink radio
The FR140 is a practical and compact device, offering good value for money with power options that let you listen to the radio and use the touch whenever and wherever you need it.
Compact, measuring 130 x 60 x 44 and weighing about 200 grams, it may be a little too big to fit in a pocket, but it fits easily in a bag. It is full of possibilities, but we see its main features.
You have a wide selection of options for powering the device. It initially comes with a solar panel on top, so if you are wandering around the world or enjoying the typical sunshine, you will be able to constantly charge the FR140. We have seen in the past that these things work much better with good sun, something that will attract more travelers than them even to the campsites in the ... Highlands of Scotland.
It also has an internal battery that can be charged via the most standard Mini-USB connection, either from a computer or from a mobile phone charger connected to the mains. It takes about 8 hours to charge to the maximum, but no cables are provided.
There is also a crank on the back which means you can turn the alternator to also power the device.
Made of good quality rubber and finish that gives the impression that it is strong enough to withstand strange shocks in a possible fall.
The radio supports FM, AM, and two SW bands. There is a built-in speaker that is quite satisfactory in volume, up to 40% maximum volume.
Radio tuning is a manual process, which rotates around the dial with a 30 cm antenna to receive a signal. We found that the reception was reasonable in the FM band, but the AM and SW signals were a bit rare - for most users, this might not be a problem.
There is an LED flashlight on the front of the FR140, which works via a button on the top. It is very bright for use on stage and makes convenient use of space inside the unit.
The last feature offered by the FR140 is mobile phone charging, a feature that should be aimed at campers or travelers who use their mobile phone to stay in touch with friends and relatives. It's a good idea in the first place, which means you do not have to worry about finding an accessible power supply when you are away from DC power sources so you can send messages to your mother.
Of course you have to turn the knob to charge your phone and that it may take 10-15 minutes of crank to have 1 minute of talk time. It is designed for emergency use only, so it does not matter.
CONCLUSION
The Eton FR140 offers you a practical device and a compact device, offering good value for money with power options that let you listen to the radio and use the LED flashlight whenever and wherever you need it.
The solar and crank options will appeal to those who may not always be able to replace alkaline batteries while on holiday.
